Twenty Shilling Wood

The woodland here sits quietly off the beaten track near Crieff, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick tick-off. Twenty Shilling Wood is straightforward forestry - mature mixed woodland with well-trodden paths that wind through trees and eventually open onto views toward Loch Earn. There's nothing flashy about it, but that's rather the point.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths are easy enough that families with younger kids won't struggle, though expect forty minutes to an hour if you're doing the full loop at a comfortable pace. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, which is lovely after tramping around Perthshire's rockier routes. Birdwatchers sometimes report decent spotting here - the mix of conifers and broadleaf trees attracts the usual woodland crowd.

It's free to access and open all year, though spring and early autumn feel best when the light filters through properly and you're not battling midges or mud. The walk itself is gentle enough that you could do this alongside a stay at Loch Earn Leisure Park just down the road - knock out the wood in a morning, then spend the afternoon by the loch itself.

Won't blow your mind, but it's a solid forty minutes in the trees without faffing about. Proper forest therapy, the Perthshire way.
