Uamh Tom a'Mhor-fhir

The cave sits about a twenty-minute walk from Pitlochry, tucked into the hillside above the River Tummel. You're after Uamh Tom a'Mhor-fhir - try saying that three times fast - which translates roughly to "the big man's cave". It's not vast, but it's genuine, and the walk to reach it matters more than the cave itself.

The approach takes you through woodland and along the riverbank, which is lovely in itself. Once inside, you get a modest chamber with decent height and the faintest echoes of whoever sheltered here centuries ago. Local legend ties it to a giant or outlaw, depending on which version you hear. The cave's more atmospheric than spectacular, if I'm honest.

This works best for walkers and history types rather than families after a quick tourist tick-box. Kids under eight might find the scramble in underwhelming. Allow a full hour there and back from town, longer if you're dawdling along the river.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn offer the best light and driest ground. Summer brings midges, which are absolutely relentless round here.

If you're based at Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley or Glengoulandie Camping just outside Pitlochry, this makes a solid half-day outing combined with the town itself. Pair it with a stroll through the Pass of Killiecrankie nearby, and you've got a proper day sorted. Don't expect Fingal's Cave drama though - this is local colour, not a headline attraction.
