Under Saddle Yoke

Under Saddle Yoke rises sharply from the moorland south of Moffat, and on a clear day the walk up is genuinely rewarding. The peak itself isn't especially high - around 1,400 feet - but what it lacks in elevation it makes up for with visibility. You get proper views across Dumfries and Galloway from the summit, with the Southern Uplands rolling away in every direction.

The walk takes about an hour and a half return from the car park, climbing steadily through heather and grass. It's not technical, but the path can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter. The real draw here is the solitude - you won't find crowds, even on weekends. Keen walkers doing a week based at one of the caravan sites near Moffat (Riverside or Howslack Farm are both close enough for an afternoon mission) will find it a solid three-hour outing. Families with older kids can manage it fine, though younger children might find the moorland a bit featureless and the walk repetitive.

Timing matters. Early morning gives you the best light and the hill feels properly wild. Winter can be harsh up here - wind funnels down from the north, and cloud often sits on the summit, wiping out the views entirely. Spring through early autumn is your window.

It's free to access, obviously, and there's parking at the trailhead. Nothing fancy, but it's exactly what a Scottish hill walk should be - straightforward, uncluttered, and quietly satisfying.
