Underhill Wood

The forest floor here is soft underfoot, mossy and quiet in a way that makes you forget Pembroke is just a few miles away. Underhill Wood is a proper woodland walk rather than a destination with facilities - you won't find a visitor centre or café, just trees, paths, and the kind of peace that's getting rarer in Pembrokeshire.

It's ideal for anyone wanting a break from the coastal trails that dominate the area. Families with young kids will manage the paths fine, though there's nothing spectacular enough to hold attention if they're after playgrounds or exhibits. Walkers who enjoy being among trees rather than views will find it worth the trip. History buffs might appreciate that it's ancient woodland, but don't expect interpretation boards or archaeological features.

You'll need to allow anything from 45 minutes for a gentle loop to two hours if you fancy exploring further. Go midweek if possible - weekends bring dog walkers and families in numbers that slightly diminish the solitude.

It slots well into a Pembrokeshire park holiday. Both Grass Roots Caravan Glamping and Eco Escape Campsite are close enough for a morning visit before heading to bigger attractions. The wood itself is free to access, but it's one of those places that works best as a palate cleanser between busier days rather than a main event.
