Upper Lliedi Reservoir

The water sits still and dark against the Carmarthenshire hills, and there's something properly peaceful about standing at Upper Lliedi Reservoir. It's a working water supply, not a leisure destination dressed up with cafes and gift shops, which means it stays quiet and genuinely lovely.

You can walk around much of the perimeter - the paths are decent without being fancy, and you'll spot herons if you're patient. The views across to the surrounding moorland are solid, especially on clear days when you can see right across the valley. It's the kind of place where you notice the light changing and feel like you've actually stepped away from things.

Walkers get the most from it. Bring proper shoes because the paths can be boggy in wet weather, and allow a good couple of hours if you want to do a full circuit. Fishermen use it too, though you'll need to check local regulations. Families with young kids might find the walk a bit long unless they're keen hikers - it's not a destination with attractions to break up the journey.

It's free to access and open year-round, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure to speak of. That's rather the point. From Llanelli, it's only a short drive inland, making it a genuine escape without driving far. If you're based at any of the nearby parks like South Wales Touring Park or River View, this makes a solid half-day outing. Go early morning when the water's glassy and the place feels entirely yours.
