Upper Plantation

Upper Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Hassocks, the sort of place you stumble upon when you're exploring the South Downs and fancy getting under the trees for an hour or so. It's not a grand country estate with manicured lawns and a visitor centre - just forest, paths, and the kind of quiet you don't get near town.

The woodland itself is dense enough to feel properly enclosed, with paths winding through mixed trees that shift through the seasons. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right. Summer is all shade and birdsong. Autumn's spectacular if the weather holds. There's something about walking among proper old trees that settles the mind - no visitors' benches or interpretation boards, just the forest doing what it does.

This works best for walkers and anyone who wants to escape the hubbub without needing a destination at the end. Kids will manage it fine if they're past the "are we there yet" phase - there's room to explore, fallen logs to clamber over, that sort of thing. Budget an hour minimum, longer if you're the type who stops to listen.

Based near Hassocks, you're well-positioned for the wider South Downs walking circuit. If you're camping at Wild Boar Wood Campsite or Blacklands Farm nearby, Upper Plantation works as a proper morning walk before heading elsewhere. No fees that I'm aware of - it's just accessible woodland. Go midweek if you can; weekends draw more footfall than a small forest needs.
