Out on the Somerset levels between Taunton and the Blackdown Hills sits a rather unexpected roadside curiosity - a scale model of the solar system laid out across the countryside. Uranus is one of several planet markers that make up the Somerset Space Walk, a free outdoor attraction that stretches for miles and lets you actually walk the relative distances between the planets.

It's the sort of thing that works brilliantly for families with kids old enough to find space interesting but too young to appreciate the real thing yet. You won't spend hours here - realistically, you'll drive to one or two planet markers, have a look, take a photo, maybe grab a facts sheet if you can find one. The idea is better than the execution, if I'm honest. Uranus itself is just a marker in a field, nothing fancy. But if you're staying at Thornhills Holiday Park or The Hideout nearby and fancy breaking up a rainy afternoon, it costs nothing and requires minimal effort.

The real appeal is more for the curious types who like finding odd little attractions off the beaten track. History buffs and serious walkers will find it a bit thin on substance. Start near Taunton and work outward if you want to tick off multiple planets, though you'll need a car - this isn't a proper walking route despite the name. Best suited to a school holiday when you need filling-in activities rather than a main event.
