Urquhart Castle

The ruins of Urquhart Castle rise dramatically from a rocky peninsula jutting into Loch Ness, about three miles south of Drumnadrochit. What you're looking at is the skeletal remains of a medieval stronghold that's been fought over, rebuilt, and partially blown up since the 13th century - it's got proper character, even in its broken state.

Walking the grounds takes about an hour if you're not rushing. The tower house still stands tall enough to climb, and from the top you get unobstructed views across the loch that justify the steep internal stairs alone. The castle itself tells a military story - you can trace centuries of Scottish border warfare through the stonework. History buffs will spend longer picking over the defensive layout; families with younger kids might find the walking and clambering enough without needing extra context.

It's one of those places that works brilliantly as a half-day excursion from either Loch Ness Glamping or Loch Ness Shores, both within easy reach. The drive from Drumnadrochit takes minutes. Go in autumn or spring when the light's best and crowds thin out - summer sees proper queues, and the loch can look grey and moody in bad weather. Worth the trip, though don't expect a full day's entertainment unless you're genuinely into castle archaeology. The views alone make it worthwhile.
