Venthill Plantation

Walking into Venthill Plantation feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - all towering conifers and surprisingly quiet for somewhere so close to Bourton-on-the-Water. This is proper forest territory, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than it should be around here.

It's straightforward stuff: a mixed plantation with decent footpaths running through, ideal for a couple of hours of rambling without the crowds you'd get at the bigger Cotswolds attractions. The trees create decent shade, so even on warm days it stays cool underfoot. You won't find any dramatic views or dramatic history - this isn't a stately home or an Iron Age fort. What you get instead is space and silence, which honestly feels like a luxury when you've been bouncing between tourist hotspots.

Families with kids who actually enjoy walking rather than complaining about it will get something out of this. The paths are manageable, though muddy patches appear after rain. Serious hikers might find it a bit tame compared to the Forest of Dean, but as a half-day addition to a Cotswolds park holiday, it works well. From Cotswolds Meadow Glamping or the Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's a short drive.

Go early morning if you can. The light filters through differently, and you'll have the place virtually to yourself. Worth a morning slot rather than a full day, really.
