Viewpoint to Old Harry Rocks

The walk out to Old Harry Rocks is one of those cliff-edge experiences that stays with you. You're standing on the chalky downland above Swanage, white limestone dropping sheer to the sea below, with two distinctive rock stacks jutting out of the water like something from a geological textbook. The eastern stack is Old Harry himself - the rocks have been there for millennia, though they're eroding steadily, losing metres every decade.

It's a straightforward walk from the National Trust car park at Studland, taking roughly 30 minutes across the heath to reach the viewpoint proper. The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, though it gets properly blustery up here - bring a jacket even on warm days. The views stretch east towards Bournemouth and west down the Jurassic Coast. On a clear day you can see the Isle of Wight. On a murky one, you'll be squinting at your phone's map to believe anything's out there at all.

This is walker territory primarily. The cliffs are genuinely dramatic and photographers will find endless angles, but there's not much to actually do once you've taken your shot and absorbed the scale of it. An hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're slow. Kids will find it impressive for twenty minutes before asking when you're stopping for lunch.

If you're staying at Ulwell or Swanage Bay View Holiday Parks, this is a cracking afternoon sortie - far less touristy than other Dorset coastal spots and properly worth the drive to Studland. Time it for late afternoon and you'll have the place to yourself.
