Wadworth Wood

The woodland around Wadworth, just outside Doncaster, is proper South Yorkshire countryside - the kind of place where you can actually breathe without seeing a car park. Wadworth Wood itself is a decent stretch of mixed forest with enough paths to keep walkers occupied for a good couple of hours without feeling like you're going in circles.

It's the sort of place that works best for people who actually want to walk, rather than those after Instagram shots. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet - there's no visitor centre or playground to break things up - but that's exactly why it appeals. You get proper woodland, some decent trees, and the occasional glimpse of local wildlife if you're lucky enough. The ground can be boggy in winter, so pick your season.

Being free is the main draw, which means it fits nicely into a caravan holiday at Sunnyview Touring Park, just 1.4 miles away. You could easily combine it with a walk and a packed lunch without spending extra. Even Hooton Lodge Farm, further out at 5.3 miles, makes Wadworth a reasonable afternoon option. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you've got time to kill and don't mind a muddy path.

Honestly? It's not a destination in itself. But if you're based nearby and fancy stretching your legs without the crowds of more famous Yorkshire spots, it does the job. Bring proper boots though.
