Wallace's Rocks

Two massive granite boulders sit on the outskirts of Newtownards like relics from some ancient game. Wallace's Rocks mark the spot where, legend has it, William Wallace rested during his travels - though locals will tell you the historical accuracy is dodgy at best. Still, they're genuinely impressive bits of stone, weathered and lichen-covered, the kind of thing that makes you stop and wonder how they got there.

It's a straightforward stop rather than a destination in itself. Ten minutes, maybe fifteen if you're the type to sit on them and contemplate the view. The rocks themselves are accessible right from the road, so there's no complicated hiking involved. History buffs will appreciate the Scottish connection, even if it's more myth than certainty. Families passing through won't find it gripping, but kids might enjoy clambering on the boulders if you're comfortable with that.

Free, obviously. No facilities, no visitor centre, just the rocks and whatever story you bring to them. If you're staying at Springvale Holiday Park or Sandycove just down the road, it's barely worth a detour - you could knock it off in the time it takes to grab a coffee. Worth a photo, certainly, but don't reroute your day for it. The real draw is how it slots into a broader potter around Newtownards and the Ards Peninsula - the rocks themselves are the supporting act, not the headline.
