Wandlebury Country Park

Just south of Cambridge, Wandlebury Country Park sits on a Iron Age hill fort with proper views across the Cambridgeshire countryside. The earthworks are still visible - concentric ditches and banks that once formed a defensive settlement, now softened by centuries of grass and weather. You can walk the ramparts themselves, which takes about 20 minutes if you're not stopping to read the information boards or fidget with your camera.

It's a solid choice for families with primary-school age kids and anyone who fancies a gentle history lesson with their legs. The park has clear walking trails, and the hill gives you enough elevation to feel like you've actually done something, though it's not strenuous. Walkers between Cambridge and the surrounding villages often loop through here. The views aren't dramatic - you won't get your breath taken away - but they're honest: open fields, wide skies, the sort of landscape that makes sense of why people chose to build fortifications here 2,000 years ago.

Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're the interpretive-board type. The park is free to access and open from dawn to dusk. If you're based at one of the caravan sites near Cambridge - Cherry Hinton is less than two miles away - this makes for a proper morning or afternoon break without needing to drive far. It pairs well with a walk into Cambridge itself on another day. Not flashy, but genuine and worth your time.
