Wardhall Covert

Walk into Wardhall Covert and you've entered proper woodland - the kind where the canopy closes above your head and the world gets quieter. It's a forest tucked away near Cockermouth, unassuming but genuinely atmospheric if you know what to do with it.

The covert itself is best explored on foot. There are paths threading through, though they're not signposted like some country park walk. You get birdsong, dappled light, the smell of leaf mould and damp earth - exactly what you want from a woodland visit. In spring and early summer the ground cover is decent; autumn's worth the trip for colour. Winter lets you see the structure of the place properly.

This works brilliantly if you're based at North Lakes Country Park or Harbour Side Caravan Park for a week's Cumbrian break. It's close enough for a morning or late-afternoon walk without eating into your day, but feels remote enough to escape the caravan crowd. Families with kids will get a couple of hours out of it easily; older walkers and anyone into woodland ecology will linger longer. It's not a full afternoon attraction - be realistic about that.

The real strength here is that it's genuinely quiet. You won't be battling crowds or dealing with visitor centre crowds. Just take decent boots, maybe a map if you've got one, and don't expect facilities. There's something rather good about that honesty.
