The Wardlaw Museum sits right in the heart of St Andrews, tucked away within the university's art collection spaces. It's a compact affair - you're not talking a sprawling gallery experience here - but what's on display is genuinely worth an hour of your time. The collection spans medieval artefacts through to contemporary work, with particular strength in Scottish art and university treasures that tell the story of St Andrews as a seat of learning.

What makes it work is the lack of pretension. There's no bombast, no scrambling for your attention. You'll find yourself lingering over individual pieces rather than power-walking through rooms. The medieval section is the real draw - early manuscripts, ecclesiastical bits and pieces - all handled with the kind of care you'd expect from a 600-year-old institution.

Families with older kids will get something from it; younger children might find it a touch dry unless they're already museum-savvy. This isn't a destination in itself, but it slots perfectly into a St Andrews day trip alongside the cathedral ruins or a wander round the Old Course. Since it's free and the opening hours are generous - late into the evening on weekdays - you can pop in without guilt.

If you're staying at St Andrews Holiday Park or Craigtoun Meadows, it's barely a ten-minute walk. Worth the detour if you're in town anyway, though don't go out of your way specially. On a wet Scottish afternoon, though, it's proper useful.
