Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Just outside Horsham, Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a proper working landscape rather than a manicured visitor attraction. You get ponds, woodland, and grassland spread across what used to be farmland, and the whole thing runs on the principle that nature does better when left alone-ish. Most people come for walking, really. The paths wind through decent habitat for birds and insects, and if you're the type who gets excited spotting a great crested newt or a nuthatch, you'll find reasons to linger.

It works best for walkers and nature enthusiasts rather than families after a day of entertainment - there's no cafe, no playground, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. You need to bring your own binoculars and a decent field guide. Allow an hour or two depending on how seriously you take the birdwatching.

Being free and open access, it pairs well with a camping weekend in the area. Sands Farm is barely a mile and a half away, so you could easily loop the reserve into a morning walk before heading elsewhere. If you're based at one of the other sites - Sumners Ponds or Slinfold are both within four miles - it's an uncomplicated detour that breaks up a day between other activities. Go early if you want to see wildlife rather than dog walkers. Spring's probably best, when migrating birds pass through, though honestly it's worth a visit any time the weather's halfway decent.
