Warnham Park

A proper working nature reserve just outside Horsham, Warnham Park is the sort of place you stumble upon and wonder why it's not rammed with visitors. Two lakes dominate the landscape - one for fishing, one for wildlife - and the walking trails that loop around them are genuinely pleasant, especially in spring when the reed warblers are active and the banks fill with wildflowers.

The reserve itself is free to access, though facilities are minimal. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching; the lake system attracts herons, grebes, and migrant waders depending on the season. Walkers will find enough here for a solid two hours, maybe three if you're the type to sit and watch for wildlife. The paths are flat and well-maintained, so it's manageable for families with younger kids, though there's not much in the way of play equipment or visitor centre attractions.

It's the kind of place that rewards a weekday visit over weekends. Park yourself on one of the benches overlooking the water, and you'll likely have it to yourself. From Horsham itself it's just a short drive or bike ride, making it ideal for breaking up a camping trip at one of the nearby sites - Sands Farm or Slinfold are both within a couple of miles. Not a day-tripper destination on its own, but absolutely worth combining with other walks in the area. Go early morning for the best light and quietest conditions.
