Warrendale Knots

You'll find Warrendale Knots just outside Skipton, a series of distinctive limestone outcrops that jut from the Yorkshire moorland like knuckles from a fist. It's the kind of place that rewards a proper walk - the rocks themselves are craggy and weathered, offering decent scrambling if you're that way inclined, though nothing technical. The views across Wharfedale are genuinely worth the leg work, especially on a clear day when you can see right across the Dales.

This works best for fell walkers and people who like their landscape a bit raw and unmanicured. It's not a visitor centre or a marked trail with interpretive boards - you're navigating by map and instinct, which some will find brilliant and others a bit frustrating. Families with young kids will find the rocks fun for climbing around, but you're looking at an hour or so before they've exhausted the novelty.

Warrendale Knots slots nicely into a walking holiday based around Skipton and the surrounding parks. Malham Glamping Pods and Peaks and Pods are both close enough that you could make this a morning objective before heading elsewhere. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of - it's open access moorland - and you'll want to allow a couple of hours including the walk-in from the nearest road. Spring and autumn are ideal: summer brings the midges, winter can make it grim underfoot. Bring proper boots and a map. You'll earn your views here.
