Watercress beds

The watercress beds east of Royston are properly the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately hunt down - which is precisely why they're worth the detour. These shallow, man-made channels cut through the flat Cambridgeshire landscape exist purely to grow watercress, but they've become something altogether more interesting: a wildlife haven where herons fish, dragonflies patrol in summer, and the water stays clear and weirdly calming.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no gift shop, no signage explaining what you're looking at. You walk the perimeter paths and watch the beds glint in the light, peaceful in a way that feels almost accidental. Walkers will appreciate the easy, flat terrain and the sense of stepping outside time. Families with younger children might find half an hour is enough unless the kids are genuinely interested in spotting birds and insects.

It's free to visit, though you'll need to be respectful of the working farm and stick to public rights of way. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light and most wildlife activity. Spring and summer are when the watercress is actively growing and the beds are at their greenest.
