Wedge Wall

Scramble up this rocky outcrop on the Gower Peninsula and you'll understand why locals call it Wedge Wall - the limestone formation juts out like a massive stone wedge from the clifftop. The views across Swansea Bay are proper spectacular on a clear day, stretching right round to Mumbles Head and beyond.

Walkers will love this spot as part of a longer coastal ramble, though it's accessible enough for families with older kids who don't mind a bit of rough ground. The approach involves some clambering over rocks, so definitely not buggy-friendly. Takes about 20 minutes to reach from the nearest car park.

Best visited in the morning when the light catches the water just right. Bring a camera - the dramatic limestone cliff face makes for cracking photos, especially with the sweep of the bay below. On windy days it can be pretty exposed up here, so wrap up warm.

If you're staying at one of the Gower holiday parks like Pitton Cross or Hillend, this makes a lovely morning excursion before hitting the beaches. The whole area around here is brilliant for coastal walking, and Wedge Wall gives you a taste of the Gower's wilder side without venturing too far from civilization. Worth combining with a trip to nearby Mumbles for lunch.
