You're looking at woodland walks rather than manicured trails, so bring decent boots if you've had rain.

The Irfon itself is the star. It's a working river, genuinely peaceful, and you'll spot it properly from various points rather than just catching glimpses. The woodland feels accessible without being twee - no twee little gift shops, just trees and water and the occasional heron if you're lucky. Most people spend two to three hours here, maybe longer if you're the sort who actually sits and watches the water.

Walkers will get the most from Weir Wood. Families with older kids, yes. Young children might find it a bit samey after the first thirty minutes, if I'm honest. The terrain is manageable, nothing punishing, but it's not a destination for a quick leg-stretch either.

It sits well within a broader Powys holiday - you're only six miles from Irfon River Caravan & Camping Park, which makes it a natural pairing for a week exploring mid-Wales. Builth Wells is close enough for supplies and a proper meal if the campsite kitchen feels like too much effort. Go early or late in the day if you want solitude. Weekday mornings are almost guaranteed peaceful.
