Well Brook Wood

Walk into Well Brook Wood and you're straight into proper Lancashire woodland - the sort of place that feels a world away from Preston even though it's barely on the city's doorstep. Ancient oaks tower overhead, streams cut through the forest floor, and the undergrowth is thick enough that you genuinely lose sight of the outside world within minutes.

It's the kind of wood that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick march through. Bring wellies if there's been rain - the paths get boggy in places, and that's half the charm. You could spend an hour here doing nothing much, or three hours if you're the type who stops to identify birds and fungi. Family groups with kids aged six and up will get decent value from exploring the various trails, though there's nothing interpretative to keep younger children entertained if they're not already into woods.

The main draw is just woodland itself - no café, no playground, no gift shop. It's free and open access, which is refreshing. Spring's brilliant here when bluebells come through, and autumn's equally good if you like kicking through leaf litter without feeling guilty.
