Wellfoot Wood

Deep woodland that creeps right up to the edge of Kendal, Wellfoot Wood feels like proper countryside sneaking into town. It's the sort of place where you can be among proper trees within minutes of the high street - ancient oaks, conifers, the whole works. The paths are well-trodden but never feel crowded, and there's enough variety to keep you wandering for a good couple of hours if you're in the mood.

Walkers will get the most from it. Families with restless kids might manage an hour before the novelty wears off, but it's genuinely decent if you're after forest air without a three-hour drive. The woodland floor does its thing depending on the season - bluebells in spring, ferns and shade in summer, proper muddy in winter. Bring boots.

There's no entrance fee as far as anyone can tell, and no formal facilities to speak of, so you're relying on your own supplies. It's free admission the way most woods are - you just turn up. The real appeal is that it sits between Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site (5.9 miles away) and Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site (4.5 miles), making it a genuine bonus if you're based at either. It breaks up a caravan holiday without requiring much planning. Not Instagram-famous, not overrun, just a proper walk through actual woodland where locals go.
