The moment you walk into Wellington Aviation, you're surrounded by actual warbirds - proper aircraft that flew in anger during the Second World War. It's a working restoration facility as much as a museum, so you'll often see engineers tinkering away on fuselages and engines, which adds a genuine industrial energy you don't get in most heritage attractions.

You can walk around the hangars and get up close to Wellingtons in various states of restoration, along with other period aircraft and a solid collection of memorabilia. The volunteers know their stuff and will chat your ear off if you let them - the kind of people who've actually studied every rivet. Allow two to three hours if you want to do it properly; rush it and you'll miss what makes it special.

It's brilliant for aviation enthusiasts and anyone with a soft spot for wartime history. Younger kids might find it a bit dry unless they're already into planes - it's more about technical detail than flashy interactives. Adults who remember the era, or their grandchildren wanting to understand it, will get the most from it.
