Wellingtonia Clump

A stand of towering giant sequoias in the middle of Surrey woodland - that's what stops you in your tracks at Wellingtonia Clump, just outside Horsham. These aren't native trees, obviously. They were planted here in the Victorian era when everyone with land wanted to show off their exotic specimens, and somehow they've thrived in the Surrey clay and drizzle.

What you get is a proper forest walk among some genuinely massive conifers. The trees are tall enough to make you crane your neck, and the whole spot has that hushed, cathedral-like quality you only get under dense canopy. It's free to wander, accessible year-round, and takes about 20-30 minutes if you're not rushing. Woodland walkers will appreciate it more than casual strollers - there's not much else here, just trees and paths.

The nearest towns are Horsham and Slinfold, so it slots naturally into a Surrey holiday if you're based at one of the local campsites. Sands Farm Weekend Camping is closest at just over a mile away. It's worth combining with a visit to Raylands Country Park (3.7 miles) if you want a fuller day out - that's got more facilities and open space.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are nicest. Summer gets a bit muggy under the canopy, and winter's muddy. Go early on a weekday if you can and you'll have the place to yourself. Families with young kids might find it a bit dull - there's no play equipment or visitor centre, just the trees themselves. But if you want a quiet woodland wander with something genuinely unusual to look at, it's well worth the detour.
