Wensleydale Brewery

You'll walk straight into the smell of malt and hops the moment you push through the brewery doors in Leyburn. Wensleydale Brewery is a proper working operation - no theme park nonsense - where they actually make the stuff you'll be drinking. The taproom is comfortable without being fussy, all wood and exposed brick, and the staff know their beers inside out.

The brewery tour itself is the main draw. You get walked through the brewing process by someone who's done this hundreds of times, shown the copper vessels, the fermentation tanks, the lot. It's educational without being dull, and there's a tasting at the end - usually four or five of their core range plus whatever seasonal they've got on. Their pale ale is genuinely good; their stout holds its own.

Beer enthusiasts will get the most from this, obviously. But it works well for a group mix too - non-drinkers can tag along, have a coffee, sit outside if the weather's decent. The taproom does decent food, proper Yorkshire fare rather than poncy gastropub attempts.

It's an easy 20-minute visit if you just want a quick pint and a browse of the merch. The full tour takes about 90 minutes with tasting included. Friday and Saturday evenings get lively, so book ahead if you're planning those slots. From either Yorkshire Dales - Holiday Park or Eastfield Glamping Farm - it's barely a detour, making it a solid half-day activity when the weather's iffy or you need a break from hiking.
