West Copse

West Copse is a proper Sussex woodland tucked near Chichester - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's not a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and gift shops. This is genuine forest floor stuff: ancient trees, dappled light filtering through the canopy, and paths that wind through what feels like the real thing.

You're walking among oak and beech mostly, with enough undergrowth to remind you that you're in working woodland. The paths are decent enough but can get muddy after rain - wellies aren't a bad shout. It's the sort of forest walk that takes as long as you want it to: you can do twenty minutes or spend hours getting lost in the deeper bits.

This works best for walkers and anyone who fancies a proper woodland escape rather than a tourist trap. Kids can burn energy here without you feeling like you're shepherding them round a theme park. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the woodland supports a good variety. It's free, as far as I can tell, which makes it even better value.

If you're based at Bow Hill Farm or Chichester Lakeside Holiday Park nearby, West Copse slots in nicely as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Don't expect facilities or signage though - this is back-to-basics woodland. Download a map beforehand or take a compass. It's authentic, quiet, and absolutely worth the detour if you want real countryside rather than a curated experience.
