West Tump

Standing stones circle a grassy mound on the hills above Stroud, marking one of Gloucestershire's most atmospheric Bronze Age burial sites. West Tump feels properly ancient - a 4,000-year-old long barrow where you can still make out the original stone chamber and forecourt arrangement that once held the remains of early farmers.

Allow about 30 minutes unless you're planning a longer walk from here. There's no formal parking, but you can find roadside spots nearby without too much trouble. It pairs well with stays at places like Cherry Tree Glamping or Star Glamping, both within a few miles of Stroud, giving you easy access to this corner of the Cotswolds where prehistoric monuments still dot the landscape.
