West Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Tewkesbury, West Wood delivers exactly what you'd want from a Gloucestershire forest - tall trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually stretch your legs without feeling hemmed in by other visitors. The canopy is thick enough that it stays cool even on warmer days, which is a genuine relief when you're mid-walk and the sun's been relentless elsewhere.

It's a straightforward place, really. You come here to walk. The woodland floor is well-maintained, the paths are clear, and there's a genuine sense of being away from it all despite being only minutes from town. Families with young children will manage the easier routes without complaint, though the more adventurous won't find anything technically demanding. Dog walkers absolutely love it - plenty of space for them to burn off energy without constantly calling them back.

Allow between 45 minutes and two hours depending on which route you take and how often you stop to catch your breath. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, autumn the usual golden light filtering through turning leaves. Winter's quieter but can be muddy underfoot, so waterproofs aren't optional.

It won't keep you occupied all day, but it's exactly the sort of accessible woodland break that makes a park holiday feel less static.
