Weston Hall sits just outside Shifnal as a proper bit of Staffordshire heritage that most people driving past on the A464 completely miss. It's a Georgian mansion rather than a castle in the traditional sense, but it's got enough architectural clout to warrant the detour if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Ted's Farm or High Onn.

The house itself dates back centuries, though what you see today is largely 18th-century rebuild work. The grounds are what make it worth your time - rolling lawns, mature trees, and the kind of quiet you don't expect this close to the Midlands towns. Inside, the rooms tell the story of how the gentry actually lived, not in some sanitised museum way.

This works best for anyone with a genuine interest in period architecture and country house history. Kids under ten will find it a bit slow unless they're the sort who enjoy poking around old staircases and imagining servants going about their day. History types and architecture enthusiasts will spend a solid couple of hours here, longer if you take the grounds seriously.

The practical side: opening hours and admission aren't immediately clear, so ring ahead before you trek over from your caravan. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing both house and grounds properly. Spring's the best time, when the gardens actually look like someone cares. It pairs well with a Shifnal walk round the town itself - proper little market town with decent pubs - and it's close enough to Oakland Holiday Park that you're never more than twenty minutes from your pitch.
