Shifnal

Ancient market towns don't come much more quietly confident than this. Shifnal sits in the heart of Shropshire's gentle countryside, a proper working town that's managed to keep its character while the world rushes past on the nearby M54. The high street still has independent shops alongside the usual suspects, and on market day you'll find proper local produce rather than the usual tourist tat.

History buffs will appreciate the Butter Cross, a lovely 16th-century market cross that's seen centuries of trading. It's the kind of detail that makes Shifnal feel authentic rather than preserved in aspic. The surrounding countryside is classic Shropshire - rolling hills dotted with copses and the odd grand house like Weston Hall peering through the trees.

Water features heavily in this corner of the county. Aqualate Mere, one of the largest natural lakes in the Midlands, lies just to the east and offers decent fishing and wildlife watching. Norton Mere provides a quieter alternative for a gentle stroll, while Moss Pool and Millwood Mere complete a quartet of waters that make this area particularly attractive for those who enjoy lakeside walks.

For something more active, the Shropshire Climbing Centre in nearby Newport provides indoor thrills when the weather turns. Newport itself, just a short drive north, adds extra options including the Rose Paterson Art Gallery and a proper swimming pool if you fancy some lengths.

Getting here couldn't be easier - junction 3 of the M54 puts you practically on Shifnal's doorstep, making it dead handy for families travelling from Birmingham or the Black Country. Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area gives you the best of both worlds: easy access to this unspoilt market town while being perfectly placed for day trips to Ironbridge or the Wrekin.
