Westonbirt, The National Arboretum

Tree collections in England don't get much more serious than Westonbirt. Spread across 600 acres of Wiltshire countryside near Stroud, this is essentially the country's premier arboretum - the kind of place where you'll see species you didn't know existed, let alone that they'd thrive in Britain.

What you're walking through are meticulously organised collections rather than wild forest. The Japanese Garden sits separate from the Woodland Garden, which differs completely from the Silk Wood. There's a logic to it all, trees labeled properly so you actually learn something instead of just wandering aimlessly past attractive foliage.

It's genuinely excellent for families with kids old enough to appreciate the walking. Little ones might flag after an hour on the paths, but school-age children with any curiosity about nature will be occupied for half a day at minimum. Photographers absolutely thrive here - the seasonal changes are dramatic, and there are spots that look professionally composed without any effort.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that much of this was established in the Victorian era; it's got real depth beyond just being pretty. Spring brings the magnolias and early flowering trees into their own. Autumn is when the Japanese Garden genuinely sings. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing it properly.

If you're based at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park or the glamping setup at Whychurch Farm - both within easy reach - Westonbirt slots in perfectly as a half-day outing that doesn't require anywhere near the effort of a full-blown tourist attraction. Worth the drive from Stroud.
