Whatborough Hill

The walk up Whatborough Hill rewards you with one of those views that makes you understand why people actually bother with peaks in the Midlands. It's not dramatic - no Alpine stuff here - but from the top you get proper visibility across Rutland towards Leicester, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the leg work.

The ascent itself takes about twenty minutes from the car park, following a well-trodden path through farmland. Nothing technical, nothing steep enough to cause real grief, but enough of a climb to feel like you've actually done something. The summit's bare and exposed, which is precisely why the view opens up so well. You'll spot the patchwork fields rolling away, and the whole Rutland landscape unfolds in a way that ground level simply doesn't give you.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's a proper little ramble rather than a five-minute photo stop. Kids over about eight will manage it fine without moaning too much. Bring a packed lunch if you've got the time; there's nothing up there but you're not high enough to feel uncomfortable eating outdoors.

It works well as part of a broader Rutland loop if you're camping at Emily's Cut or Fox's Furrow. The hill itself is free to access, and you can combine it with exploring the villages around Leicester without driving far. Go early on a weekend to dodge the school groups - late afternoon light is lovely but the wind picks up properly as the sun drops.
