Whitton Hill

The walk up Whitton Hill rewards you with one of those rare Northumberland views that justifies the leg work. It's a proper climb from Wooler - nothing technical, but steep enough that you'll feel it - and the summit opens onto rolling moorland that stretches towards the Cheviot Hills. The trig point marks the top at 427 metres, and on a clear day you're scanning across miles of empty countryside. Worth allowing ninety minutes from the car park if you're not a regular hill walker.

Whitton Hill works brilliantly as a half-day excursion from Highburn House Caravan Park or Riverside Wooler, both within striking distance. Wooler itself is a small market town with cafes and shops, so you can grab provisions beforehand. The hill feels genuinely remote despite being accessible, which is precisely what makes it worthwhile.
