Wicks Wood

Getting lost in Wicks Wood is rather the point. This proper woodland sits east of Stevenage and offers the kind of quiet you don't often find near a town - think deciduous trees, forest floor, the lot. It's not a manicured country estate or an obvious tourist draw. It's just a decent patch of forest where locals walk dogs and families poke about looking for toads.

The wood works best if you're genuinely after a break from the Hertfordshire flatlands. Walkers will appreciate the paths threading through the trees, though nothing here demands serious boots or fitness. It's more of a mosey than a march. Kids might get an hour out of it before asking if there's a playground - older ones who actually like being outside will do better. History buffs won't find much to grip them.

If you're staying at Church Farm Ardeley just down the road - it's only 4 miles away - Wicks Wood makes a morning outing. Pair it with a proper walk elsewhere in the area if you want something more substantial. Go early on a weekday if you can, when the place feels genuinely remote rather than like somewhere people cut through on their way to somewhere else. The whole thing takes as long as you fancy - anywhere from thirty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how much you want to wander about. No entrance fee, no fuss. Just woodland.
