Wickslip Wood

Wickslip Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Newent, the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - though that's exactly what makes it worth the detour. The forest is dense enough to feel genuinely secluded, with paths that wind through a mixture of mature trees and younger growth, giving it that real working woodland feel rather than the manicured country estate vibe.

You'll spend a good hour or so here if you take it slowly, picking your way along the trails and actually noticing things. In spring, the floor comes alive with bluebells. The canopy overhead is thick enough that even on grey days it feels atmospheric rather than gloomy. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no heritage board explaining what you're looking at - which is either refreshingly honest or slightly frustrating depending on how you feel about that sort of thing.

It's ideal for walkers who want a genuine bit of forest without the crowds that come with more famous spots. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find an hour is their limit.
