Wigginton Baptist Chapel

A modest red-brick chapel tucked away in rural Buckinghamshire, Wigginton Baptist Chapel is the sort of place you'd stumble upon while rambling through the Chilterns rather than deliberately seek out. Built in the 19th century, it's a straightforward example of Victorian Nonconformist architecture - nothing elaborate, but genuinely affecting in its simplicity.

The appeal here is less about architectural spectacle and more about atmosphere. If you're into local religious history or have a soft spot for these small dissenting chapels, you'll find it worthwhile. The building itself tells you something real about how ordinary people worshipped away from the established church. For casual visitors, though, it's a quick five-minute stop rather than a destination.

Berkhamsted, just a couple of miles south, is where you'd base yourself for the wider area. The chapel works best as part of a walking day through the villages and commons around here - the Chilterns walking network is genuinely excellent if you've got decent boots and half a day spare.

If you're camping locally - Norcott Campsite in the Orchard is barely a mile away, or Chiltern Yurts a bit further out - this could fill an hour between pitching your tent and dinner. Check opening times locally before you visit; these smaller chapels aren't always open to casual visitors. Worth a detour if you're already walking in the area, less worth it as a solo trip from further afield.
