Wigginton Waterfowl Sanctuary

The reedy wetlands around Wigginton pull in serious numbers of waterfowl - you'll see mallards, teals, and if you're lucky, the odd grebe gliding across the water. It's a proper working sanctuary rather than a manicured attraction, which means the birds dictate the action here, not the other way round.

Bring binoculars and patience. Early morning is when most activity happens, so if you're staying at Newton Grove or Cotswold Hills Country Park nearby, get there before 9am. The walk around the ponds takes about an hour, longer if you're doing serious birdwatching. Families with young children sometimes find it a bit slow-paced unless the kids are genuinely into spotting species - there's nowhere to buy coffee or snacks, so come prepared.

Free access, which is the right price for what's essentially a walk around some ponds. In winter the sanctuary fills up with migratory birds, so November through February is when it's worth the detour from Banbury. Spring is decent too, though the summer months can feel a bit thin on wildlife. It works well as a morning outing between staying at Crofts Barn Campsite and heading into the Cotswolds proper for lunch. Best for serious birders or anyone who wants a quiet, unrushed hour in proper English countryside.
