Wiggs Wood

The woodland around Wiggs Wood feels properly Hampshire - tall oaks and beeches, dappled light, the sort of place where you half expect to bump into a gamekeeper from 1952. It's a decent walk through mixed forest with tracks that work equally well for families or anyone wanting to stretch their legs without the rigmarole of a proper hiking expedition.

What you get here is straightforward. There are established paths through the trees, enough to occupy an afternoon without demanding full commitment. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is either lovely or muddy depending on the weather - bring proper boots in winter. You won't find facilities or signboards explaining the ecological importance of deadwood, but that's not really the point. Kids aged six and up will enjoy it; younger ones might flag after twenty minutes. Dogs love it, obviously.

Its real value sits in proximity to Southampton. If you're based at ScottsHaven or Rookesbury Park - both within three miles - Wiggs Wood offers an easy morning or afternoon without driving. The wood itself won't take more than ninety minutes to two hours unless you're deliberately dawdling. Glamping at Wallops Wood is slightly further but still reasonable.

Go when it's not raining if possible. The forest is pleasant but unremarkable - it's the accessibility that matters. Don't expect sweeping vistas or rare wildlife sightings. Expect shelter, quiet, and the chance to breathe properly away from the A35.
