Wild Bottom Wood

You'll find Wild Bottom Wood just outside Preston, a proper working woodland that feels like it's been forgotten by most visitors. It's the sort of place where you can actually walk without bumping into crowds - though that also means the paths aren't always obvious. The woodland itself is dense enough to feel properly wild, with a mix of broadleaf and conifer, streams running through, and the kind of undergrowth that makes you feel like you're actually exploring rather than strolling through a manicured forest.

Walkers will get the most from it. Bring decent boots - the ground gets muddy and root-strewn, especially after rain. There's no obvious entrance fee, no visitor centre, none of that. You just turn up and walk. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do it properly rather than just a quick loop.

It's not a destination on its own, mind you. But if you're based at Northwood Caravan & Holiday Park or Dale Hey Farm nearby, it's the sort of place to drag yourself out to on a morning when the weather's reasonable. The isolation is actually its strength - you won't be queuing or fighting for photo spots. Just damp earth, birdsong, and the occasional moment where you genuinely wonder if you're going the right way. Real woodland, in other words.
