Wild Denchworth - Nature Reserve

There's a proper stretch of ancient woodland just outside Wantage that most people barrel past on the way to somewhere else. Wild Denchworth is what happens when you actually stop and have a look around. It's a nature reserve where the trees have been left to do their thing - you're walking through the kind of tangled, overgrown woodland that makes you feel a bit like you've stepped out of time. The paths are muddy more often than not, which is part of the appeal. You'll spot birds you probably won't see anywhere else, and if you're lucky, some of the smaller mammals that live there. It's the sort of place where you can hear yourself think, which feels increasingly rare. The reserve isn't set up for hand-holding tourists - there's no visitor centre, no cafe, no Instagram backdrop. You just turn up and walk. Families with kids who actually like getting mucky will find it brilliant. Anyone keen on woodland ecology or bird watching should absolutely make the effort. Walkers pass through regularly, and it connects nicely with other routes in the area. Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore rather than just do a quick loop.
