Wildmoor Heath Nature Reserve

The heath sprawls across Wokingham's outskirts in a way that catches you off guard - one moment you're in suburbia, the next you're surrounded by open grassland and scattered pines. Wildmoor Heath is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick loop.

The reserve is managed for its heathland habitat, which means you get wide-open views, gorse, and heather depending on the season. Spring brings carpets of new growth; late summer and autumn are when the heather blooms and the light turns that particular shade of gold that makes photographers lose their minds. You'll spot common lizards if you're patient, and the birdsong is genuinely decent for somewhere this close to town.

It's ideal for walkers who want space without the crowds, or families with older kids who can manage a few miles on sandy paths. The terrain is easy enough - no steep climbs - but it's not a stroll-around-the-pond sort of affair. Allow a couple of hours if you want to see it properly. Bring decent shoes; the paths can be boggy in wet weather.
