Wiliton Recreation Ground

A flat stretch of grassland and woodland just outside Watchet that does exactly what it says on the tin - provides a decent spot for a walk without fuss or fanfare. The ground itself is unremarkable, but that's rather the point. You get paths winding through trees, open fields for a proper stretch of the legs, and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in even during school holidays.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're staying at Haven Doniford Bay or Warren Bay nearby and need to burn off energy without travelling far. Kids won't be overwhelmed by crowds or entrance fees, and dog walkers seem to treat it as their unofficial headquarters. The walking itself is straightforward - nothing steep, nothing complicated - which makes it ideal for families with younger children or anyone after a gentle constitutional.

Don't come expecting dramatic views or rare wildlife sightings. What you get is a functional, pleasant green space that slots neatly into a Somerset coast holiday without demanding much of your time or attention. An hour will do it comfortably, though you could easily stretch to two if you're in no hurry. Free to access and no faffing about with opening times - that's the real draw. If you're camped at Hoburne Blue Anchor or Moorhouse Campsite and fancy a change of scenery from the caravan, this works. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a week's coastal pottering, it has its place.
