Willie's Wood

Walking into Willie's Wood near Macclesfield feels like stepping back into someone's private forest - because essentially that's what it is. This intimate woodland sits on the edge of the Peak District foothills and gives you proper old-school English forest vibes without the crowds you'd find at bigger attractions. The paths wind through mature trees, the light filters through the canopy in that lovely way that makes you feel like you've actually got away from it all.

It's the sort of place walkers absolutely lap up. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum to get through the main trails comfortably, which makes it ideal if you're not after a full-day hike but want something more substantial than a garden stroll. Families with older kids do well here - younger ones might find it a touch samey after the first mile, but if they're into bug spotting or collecting interesting leaves, they'll be occupied.

The wood works brilliantly as a half-day activity slotted between a stay at one of the nearby parks. Woodlands Park is barely five miles away, which means you could easily visit Willie's Wood in the morning and still have time for a proper base-camp afternoon. Yellowstone, just over six miles off in Sandbach direction, offers similar flexibility. Neither location is so far that the drive becomes irritating.

Visit in autumn if you can - the colour change is worth the trip alone. Bring wellies even in summer; these old woodlands don't dry out quickly.
