Wimblestone

Three ancient standing stones rise from a field just outside Winscombe, marking what archaeologists believe was once a Bronze Age stone circle. Only these survivors remain from what was likely a much larger monument, their weathered limestone faces telling stories spanning four millennia.

The tallest stone reaches about eight feet, with its companions standing somewhat shorter but equally impressive. Local legend claims they're the petrified remains of dancers caught celebrating on the Sabbath - a tale that's clearly nonsense but adds a bit of folklore charm to your visit.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the site's significance as part of the Mendip Hills' rich prehistoric landscape, though don't expect detailed interpretation boards or facilities. This is archaeology in the raw, accessible via a short walk across farmland that can get properly muddy after rain.

Families staying at nearby Cheddar Woods Resort or the various Cheddar campsites will find it makes a decent leg-stretcher, though younger children might lose interest after the initial excitement of touching ancient stone. The site works well as part of a broader Mendip exploration - you're only a few miles from Cheddar Gorge's more dramatic attractions.

Allow half an hour unless you're the type who likes to sit and contemplate the weight of history. Best visited on a clear day when the surrounding Somerset countryside provides a proper backdrop to these solitary sentinels.
