Windmill Hill

The walk up Windmill Hill, just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed, rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb entirely worth it. From the top, you get proper 360-degree vistas across the Scottish Borders and down towards the coast - on a clear day the visibility is genuinely impressive. The hill itself isn't enormous, so it's manageable for most fitness levels, though the path can be muddy after rain and the wind at the summit lives up to its name.

It's a solid choice for families who want a proper outdoor hour without committing to a full day's trek, and walkers will appreciate the uncluttered routes around the area. History types might be interested to know the windmill that gave the hill its name is long gone, but there's enough evidence of past settlement to keep you curious. The climb takes about 20-30 minutes depending on your pace.

Being just outside Berwick makes it an easy add-on to a park holiday - Haven Haggerston Castle is barely over a mile away, so you can combine it with beach time or the facilities there. The town itself has decent pubs and chip shops for post-walk refuelling. Free to access, no facilities on the hill itself, so come prepared. Worth doing early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and crowds are thinner.
