Rabbit Hill

The climb up Rabbit Hill near Berwick-upon-Tweed doesn't take long, but the payoff is disproportionate to the effort. This is the sort of place that suits families with older kids who won't complain about a forty-minute round trip, or anyone after a brisk leg-stretcher while staying nearby. History enthusiasts will appreciate being this close to the actual border - Berwick itself is a proper frontier town with more castles and fortifications than you can shake a stick at, so Rabbit Hill works nicely as part of a wider historical sweep. It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round, though winter can turn the path squelchy.

If you're camped at South Meadows or the Barn at Beal - both solid bases for the area - this is an easy morning walk before heading into Berwick for lunch. Haven Haggerston Castle is further out but still manages it as a gentle outing. The real value here is simplicity. No visitor centre, no facilities, no faffing about. Just a hill, decent views, and the border country doing what it does best.
