Winksley Banks Wood

The woodland walk at Winksley Banks is one of those places you stumble upon by accident and then keep coming back to. It's proper woodland - the kind with actual trees rather than a manicured nature reserve - sitting just outside Ripon in North Yorkshire. The banks themselves are steep in places, dropping down to the river, and the paths wind through beech and oak in a way that feels genuinely removed from the market town just beyond.

You're looking at maybe an hour to ninety minutes if you take the main loop without rushing, though it's easy to stretch it longer if you fancy poking about. The ground can get boggy after rain, so decent boots matter more than you'd think. It's free to access and there's no visitor centre or facilities, which means it stays quiet even when everywhere else is rammed.

Historyalists will get a kick from the industrial heritage - the banks tell stories of old mills and water management that once mattered hugely to the area. Dog walkers love it. Families with older kids find it engaging without being too taxing. The views down to the water are genuinely worth the climb out.
