Wistman's Wood

The moment you step into Wistman's Wood, near Tavistock, you understand why locals speak about it in hushed tones. This isn't a manicured forest walk - it's something altogether stranger. Gnarled oaks, some over 400 years old, twist at impossible angles. Their branches drip with moss so thick it muffles sound. The ground beneath your feet is chaos: twisted roots, boulders covered in lichen, a stream that seems to flow in several directions at once.

It's genuinely eerie, and that's precisely the appeal. The wood covers just 12 acres but feels far larger because walking through it demands concentration. You're not powering along a path here - you're picking your way. Most visitors allow 45 minutes to an hour, which is plenty. There's no entrance fee and no operating hours to speak of; you're free to wander whenever you fancy.

Historians and landscape photographers are the ones who truly get it. Families with young kids? They'll either love the adventure playground feel of clambering over roots and rocks, or find it a bit too much like hard work. It's genuinely magical in mist or early morning light, when the whole place looks straight out of folklore.

The location works brilliantly alongside a Dartmoor National Park holiday. Wistman's is right on the park's western edge, just 1.8 miles away, so you can combine it with bigger walks across open moorland. Grab a base at Langstone Manor, five miles north near Tavistock, and you've got yourself a proper woodland-and-moor break.
