Wivenhoe Nature Park

The reservoir and surrounding wetland at Wivenhoe, just east of Colchester, is one of those places that rewards a proper look around. It's working water infrastructure - built to supply the town - but the banks have gone wild in the best way, creating habitat that attracts serious birdwatchers and casual strollers alike.

What you get here is a decent walk with genuine wildlife interest. The water itself is the draw - you'll spot wildfowl, waders depending on the season, and if you're lucky, something rarer. There are viewing areas and paths that let you get close without disturbing anything. It's not a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and gift shops. It's the real thing.

This works best for walkers and anyone with binoculars. Families with restless young kids might find it a bit thin on attractions after half an hour, but if your children are old enough to actually watch birds rather than chase them, they'll get something from it. Early morning or dusk is when the wildlife is most active.

Entry appears to be free, and you can spend anywhere from an hour's quick circuit to a full morning if you're into proper birdwatching. It slots well into a longer Essex coast trip - you're close to Colchester itself, and the string of holiday parks on Mersea Island and nearby are within easy reach. Combine this with one of the caravan parks at Ardleigh or Fen Farm if you want to base yourself around here for a few days.
